Ananya Dance Theatre: Tushaanal: Fires of Dry Grass
The latest in Ananya Chatterjea's powerful series of dance works exploring the lives of women of color in third-world countries, "Tushaanal: Fires of Dry Grass" juxtaposes stories of violence and violation in South Africa's gold mines, dowry deaths in south Asia, and sexual labor near mining camps in such areas as Congo and Guatemala. Through the Indian dance form of Odissi and martial art forms such as Chhau, the fierce women of Ananya Dance Theater deliver a message of resistance and empowerment. Political dance theater has been around for a long time, but seldom delivered with this level of commitment and sheer force of will. The multi award-winning ensemble includes Chatterjea, recipient of a 2011 Guggenheim Fellowship, and OBIE Award-winning theater artist Laurie Carols, as well as internationally acclaimed musicians Michelle Kinney, Pooja Goswami, Mankwe Ndosi, and Greg Schutte, who composed the score.
