Ananya Dance Theatre: Moreechika: Season of Mirage
"Moreechika: Season of Mirage" is the third work in a four-part investigation into violence, trauma, resistance, and empowerment experienced by communities of color in third-world countries. The fierce women (and one man) of Ananya Dance Theatre fuse the Indian dance form Odissi with martial arts to create resonant, political dance theater. The human cost of oil extraction ignites this work, which derives from numerous sources including the injustices perpetrated on the Ogoni people by Shell Oil and the destruction of their land and ecosystem, the struggles of the U'wa community of Colombia, the responses of the indigenous Kichwas women of Ecuador to Chevron Oil, and the resistance in North America to sending the Keystone XL Pipeline through Native American land. Commissioned by the international New Waves! Commission Project, "Moreechika" employs giant shadow puppets by Annie Rollins and original music by Greg Schutte. (Photo by V. Paul Virtucio)
