An Interim Report on the Excavation of ZONE 5
The conflation of art and architecture into something altogether different is the premise of the intriguingly Area 51ish-titled "Excavation of ZONE 5." For the past several months, the black-ops-like "Department of Public Design" has been blogging (obscurely) about the doings of its "Council of Architects" (Alchemy, ALTUS Architecture + Design, CityDeskStudio, Locus Architecture, and RoehrSchmitt/HLKB Architecture). Words like "excavation" and "arcane constructions" pepper the missives, as do images of rusted, corroded, or bright-red building bits. Jay Isenberg and Lynda Monick-Isenberg are curating, but it's "Member Roehr" (architect Michael Roehr) who has provided the most cogent explanation of doings thus far: "This project has grown out of a conversation amongst a specific group of working architects interested in exploring new ways of working together that might leverage their particular (sometimes peculiar) skills and collective energy to new and unforeseen ends. The project itself is an effort to tease out that ever mystifying and primal relationship between things and meaning—how meaning imbues a thing; how a thing embodies meaning." The opening reception is from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 16.
