Among Bboys: A Taste of Hmong Culture
Minnesota is home to a large and vibrant Hmong community full of rich traditions. But this Saturday is a chance to experience a different side of the culture, when B-boys battle on the breakdancing floor. The UMN Breakers, the UMN Hmong Student Association (HMSA), and Tsev Hmoob (Hmong House in Comstock Hall) are hosting an event that highlights traditional Hmong culture while embracing hip hop and B-boying. The highlight of the festival will be a screening of the documentary Among Bboys, directed by Christopher Woon. The film explores how Hmong youth have become immersed in not only B-boying, but also hip hop since the 1990s. Woon will be present for the viewing, and will be participating in a question-and-answer session afterward. In addition, the celebration will have free Hmong food, performances by HMSA, traditional flute music, and a 1v1 Bboy exhibition battle between Hue Yang and Tu Nguyen, plus Crew performances with Flo'riental Flava and Motion Crew.
