Amber Preston

Telling jokes in Los Angeles is a little different from telling them in the Midwest, says comedian Amber Preston. Crowds out West really enjoy the fact that she comes from Fargo. "People seem to get a kick out of hearing me talk about that, but I don't really tweak anything for L.A. audiences. I still do a lot of the same material, but trying not to fall into the trap of, 'You know why L.A. is so different?' I'm trying to stay true to myself. Luckily I go back and forth quite a lot, so I can try something in L.A. and then try it in the Midwest and see what people think." She always gets laughs, but thinks that some people laugh at her jokes for different reasons. "I think maybe the things people find entertaining in my set they find funny for different reasons in the Midwest," she says. "They might think, 'Oh yeah, I've been there. That sounds like my dad.' And maybe out here on the West Coast it's more like, 'Oh yeah, I've heard of that' or 'Small towns? I could never live in one.' More like outsiders laughing at it." She also points out that with so many transplanted Midwesterners in L.A., a lot of what she talks about onstage is pretty familiar. Take camping, for example. "I love sitting around a campfire, that's my favorite," she tells an audience. "I love the campfire, you just stare at it. It's intoxicating. It's hypnotizing. Staring at the fire is kind of like when there's a baby in the room. You just stare at it. But throw that baby in the campfire?" She sighs. "People just stare at you." Mike Lester opens.
