Minnesota author Alan DeNiro begins at the end for his debut novel, Total Oblivion, More or Less (Spectra). Set in a post-apocalyptic America where invading Scythian armies and plague-bearing wasps are the news of the day, the novel mines the musings of 16-year-old protagonist Macy as she and her Minnesota family travel down the Mississippi River to seek refuge from the bedlam. Channeling family drama and teen angst, DeNiro snakes between surrealism, dark humor, and poignancy in the imaginative adventure narrative. An iMix he has created for the novel (Andrew Bird's "Scythian Empires" would've been an obvious choice) adds an audio dimension, featuring Brother Ali's "Uncle Sam Goddamn" and other apt tracks.
