Currently configured as the trio of Miles Seaton, Seth Olinsky, and Dana Janssen, Akron/Family has been wildly eclectic and unpredictable over its decade or so of existence, variously flirting with neo-psychedelia, ambient, pop, squally rock, stuff on the experimental fringe (noise, free jazz), and often offering it in a fuzzy spiritual/sci-fi context. Measures of all that, but with a substantial degree of pastoral folk, were on 2011's The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT, in addition to it supposedly being put together in a cabin near an active Japanese volcano. On A/F's forthcoming Sub Verses, metaphoric red-hot lava seems to have inundated the music, which is generally far more aggressive blues-based rock, its thunderous textures ignited by raging electric guitars, driving percussion, spacey electronics, and mutant Beach Boys vocals. "Monumental land art installations" are cited by the band as inspiration for this new bombast, which still harbors fathoms of complexity. Opening will be L.A. avant-electronicist M. Geddes Gengras. 18+.
