AIS 123... 4: An Exhibition Celebrating Artists in Storefronts
It's hard to believe that it has been just a year since Artists in Storefronts splashed onto the Twin Cities scene. Led by the fearless Joan Vorderbruggen, the organization has supported public art such as murals, installations in empty storefronts, exhibitions in store windows, and an experimental performance series. As a result, the project has set the bar a little higher for community-engaged art-making in the cities, where placemaking art projects have exploded in recent years. The group is now celebrating with an exhibit at SOO Local, Soo Visual Arts Center's satellite space, featuring work by participants of the Artists in Storefronts series. Special events scheduled during the show's run include a screening with filmmaker Jason Wade at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 27; a new performance by Jaime Carrera called "Cheesus" (also with Wade) at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 31; and an artists' talk with Vorderbruggen and core artists including Carrera, Tim Carroll, Venus De Mars, and Steven Lang at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 10. Things will kick off with an opening reception from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 23. (Pictured: An AIS storefront that paid tribute to the late great costumer designer Jack Edwards)
