Los Angeles rapper Aceyalone already has an impressive résumé, but his latest album, Leanin' on Slick, adds a whole new perspective. His early work with Freestyle Fellowship birthed some of the most explosive styles the underground ever produced, and his subsequent solo work built on that tradition with a distinctly new sound on each record. On his 11th solo album, frequent collaborating producer Minneapolis's own Bionik cooked up an album's worth of hard-hitting, sample-free straight funk that finds Ace behaving like James Brown. He's the bandleader rather than simply rapper over beats. It's a bouncy, fun record that filters Ace's energy into new territory, and this rare Minneapolis show will capture the feel with a full band. Support from Sonny Knight and the Lakers from Secret Stash Records make this a night that funk, soul, and hip-hop fans will all remember vividly.
