A Heartland Holiday Concert
The music of fiddle and mandolin virtuoso Peter Ostroushko evokes the American heartland with the vivid colors and timbral splendor of Grant Wood and Aaron Copland. But his annual Heartland Holiday extravaganza wanders the globe, from the realms of the Celts to steamy latitudes where Brazilian choros originate, and back to the icy land of fjords and mists haunted by strange, ethereal strains. Ostroushko and singer Natalie Nowytski especially make the connection between Nordeast Minneapolis and their ancestral roots with Ukrainian tunes and carols. A warm and convivial spirit envelops the Fitz each year for a welcome event that is particularly Minnesotan, yet connects us to the world. The regular Heartland Holiday Ensemble will be on hand, including fabulous singer Ruth MacKenzie, keyboardist Dan Chouinard, percussionist Marc Anderson, bassist Joel Sayles, and guitarist Dirk Freymuth. In addition, storytellers Kevin Kling and Jim Stowell will perform, as will North Dakota farmer/singer-songwriter Chuck Suchy, whose stuff is also strongly tied to the prairie.
Sat., Dec. 20, 8 p.m., 2008
