A Christmas Carol
Positioned somewhere between venerable holiday staple and war horse, the Guthrie Theater's A Christmas Carol underwent a renovation a few years back. The revamped show, now in its third year, boasts a fresh script by Brit Crispin Whittell, as well as J.C. Cutler as Scrooge (his second year in the role). This season, a new director joins in: Flying Foot Forum founder and artistic director Joe Chvala. This won't be his first involvement with A Christmas Carol, as he previously served as the movement director for the Guthrie production. Chvala's innovative work has made him a favorite of aficionados of theater and dance. He finds a good team in Whittell's stripped-down script and Cutler's cutting interpretation of the miser who learns the spirit of Christmas from a trio of ghosts. The company features a mix of familiar Christmas Carol veterans, eight alumni from the Guthrie/University of Minnesota acting program, and a 13-member children's ensemble. In previews November 13-16. There are additional morning, matinee, and evening performances scheduled, so check online for a complete list of dates and times. (Photo by Michael Brosilow)
