2013 Saint Paul Almanac Launch Party
The Saint Paul Almanac is a project that has grown impressively over the past seven years. What was once a handy book with black-and-white photography inside is now a publication filled with colorful maps, special pull-out illustrations, and even an online companion site (saintpaulalmanac.org) that hosts info on community happenings and additional stories. The 2013 edition will once again bring together a varied collection of essays, poems, artworks, and stories from a group of contributors that includes longtime residents and people who are new to the city, high school students and grandparents, first-time writers and local luminaries. This year's publication features 132 pieces by 114 folks who were blind-selected by editors from hundreds of submissions. Expect stories of Irish ghosts, brewery workers from the '20s, first kisses, bullies, bicycles, iguana road kill, and a flood-threatened wedding. To celebrate, Thursday night's launch party at AZ Gallery, the Black Dog Coffee and Wine Bar, and Clouds in Water Zen Center (all in the same building) will boast food, artwork, and readings from St. Paul Poet Laureate Carol Connolly, Diego Vázquez Jr., Tish Jones, Loren Niemi, and others.
