2011 Saint Paul Almanac Release Party
Though the word "almanac" is prominently featured in its title, the 2011 Saint Paul Almanac has nary a weather forecast. Its pages contain something much more interesting than jam recipes and predictions of snowy winters: the essence of the city's community. How do they do this? Each year a team of editors read and review hundreds of submissions collectively diverse in subject matter and writing style. This year's publication includes 116 poems and 129 stories in total. Authors range from recent immigrants to artists to journalists to lawyers, and topics include one man's hilarious epiphany in the restroom at O'Gara's, an immigrant's musings on the differences between Minnesota and Burma, and one author's opinion on public art. There are also plenty of events listed to keep on your radar for each month throughout the year. This Thursday, publishers will be celebrating the fifth edition with readings from several participants, including St. Paul's Poet Laureate Carol Connolly and hip-hop artist Desdamona. Pick up a copy and consider sharing your own story next year.
