2011/12 McKnight Visual Artists Fellowship Exhibition
Debates about relational aesthetics will certainly follow the opening of this exhibition. The installations, performances, and process-related works by McKnight fellows Christine Baeumler, Liz Miller, Elizabeth Simonson, and Marcus Young are rife with questions about human interaction, social context, and public versus private. Baeumler's tamarack-bog installation above the MCAD entryway, Simonson's installation of beaded pods, and Miller's 26-foot-tall felt sculpture grapple with materiality while challenging expectations for viewing artworks. In contrast, Young's behavioral-art piece includes posting his Craigslist and personal ads on the walls for, respectively, his gallery marketplace in which he'll sell various belongings (part of the conceptual artwork examines decluttering in consumer-driven culture) and his ongoing search for Mr. Right. There will be an opening reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, July 13, and an artists' panel discussion at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 14. (Pictured: Christine Baeumler's tamarack bog)
