10,000 Lakes Festival
When Wayne Coyne meets George Clinton at July's 10,000 Lakes Festival, who do you think will walk away feeling more disoriented? Alike in spirit and surname initials, Coyne's Flaming Lips and Clinton's Parliament-Funkadelic serve as the linchpins for this local festival. Its website sells the Grateful Dead's Phil Lesh as the main attraction, and the chance to see jam rock's deputy architect is nothing to blow bong smoke at. But in 2008, Clinton's particular vision of spiritual liberty, to which Coyne is heir apparent, has retained more of its showroom shine over the decades of abuse and adoration to which it's been subjected; Lesh's image has been mildly tarnished by those scourges of modern pacifism, the hacky sack, the hemp necklace, and the blond dreadlock. The 10,000 Lakes Festival has everything it needs to be a vital perennial: An open pasture, a few dozen great acts, and a catchy acronym. Our eyes are already set on 10KLF 2009. Also with Michael Franti & Spearhead, Wookiefoot, the Bad Plus, Dark Star Orchestra, and more.
Wed., July 23, 6 p.m.-midnight; Thursdays-Saturdays, noon-1:30 a.m. Starts: July 23. Continues through July 26, 2008
