    BEST LOCAL BOY MADE GOOD

    Gov. Jesse Ventura

What, you thought we were gonna give it to Skip Humphrey? Way back in the summer of '97, when the gube-jockeying commenced, the race gained national notice as a quartet of DFL scions pitted themselves against each other to face Democratic carpetbagger-turned-GOP mouthpiece Norm Coleman. But as Mark Dayton, Ted Mondale, and Mike Freeman fell by the wayside, and the Humphrey and Coleman campaigns foundered, ol' Jesse ran away with the race. And all the while, the media stood by slack-jawed with their collective fly unzipped. Now, if we could only imbue all our political contests with this sort of entertainment value, our elected officials wouldn't need to hustle off to Hollywood shilling for more northern exposure; Tinseltown would be beating down our door.
