BEST LOCAL JAZZ ARTIST Anthony Cox
It is our great good fortune that Cox, who is internationally renowned as one of the sturdiest, most adventuresome bassists in jazz, prefers to maintain his Minnesota residence as a respite between high-powered gigs in New York and elsewhere. Rather than rest on his laurels and reputation, Cox never stops trying to find new ways to expand his virtuosity. Early last year, he added a "guitar bass" instrument--made especially for him--to his repertoire, and he's concentrated more on electric bass during his relatively frequent local gigs with the trio Souls of Kilimanjaro. Local jazz fans have been able to catch him at venues ranging from a small church in a quiet St. Paul neighborhood to the Mill City Music Festival in downtown Minneapolis; his most regular haunt remains the Artists' Quarter. But wherever he lands, Cox always provides the listener with a fresh approach and an abundance of technique.
