BEST PLACE TO BIRD-WATCH The Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge
Pack your bird guide and your binocs, because you're bound to see some uncommon species here. The big guys--bald eagles, pelicans, and egrets--like to hang out in these parts, and if you're lucky, you'll glimpse some showy, smaller ones too, like warblers, indigo buntings, and ruby-crowned kinglets. The refuge is a rest stop for migrating birds, a nursery for waterfowl, and home to a rare and raucous heron rookery. The park encompasses more than 10,000 acres of wetlands and river valley and is accessible by foot, bike, canoe, ski, and car. To the quiet and respectful visitor, it can yield breathtaking sightings. Alternately, if you're loud, you might have the displeasure of seeing some cool birds fly off in terror.
