BEST HOT DOGS The Wienery
The average American eats 80 hot dogs a year, and if you're not eating yours at the Wienery you're doing yourself a disservice. Pony up to owner Jerry Petermeier's counter for a real Chicago red hot--a Vienna beef dog served in a poppy-seed bun and topped with yellow mustard, hot green relish, quarters of crisp pickles, fresh onions, ripe tomatoes, a dusting of celery salt, and (optional) pickled peppers. If you're not in a Chicago mood, go for a "Manhattan" (smothered under homemade chili), a "Warsaw" (served New York deli-style with grainy mustard and hot sauerkraut), a "Maxwell Street" (with sweet sautéed onions and fried green peppers), or a "Tasmanian Devil" (a chili dog with habanero peppers). Prices range from less than two bucks to more than three, depending on your choice of size and style.
