BEST MOVIE THEATER Oak Street Cinema
How do we love this local museum of the moving image? Let us count the ways: Its current spring calendar would be remarkable simply for premiering such modern classics of world cinema as Wong Kar-Wai's Happy Together and Aleksandr Sokurov's Mother and Son (starts May 29). But there are also newly struck prints of old classics like Jour de Fete and Picnic at Hanging Rock; a tribute to Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune (including Kurosawa's Rashomon); a four-film series of '70s sci-fi epics (through May 26); and three local-indie programs whose makers have graciously been allowed to four-wall the house. Over the last three years, this type of smart, catholic programming has spoken for itself. But the rare privilege of watching Shaft in the company of director Gordon Parks a while back turned Oak Street from a uniquely great movie theater into a cultural landmark.
