Best Weekend Getaway Minneapolis 2014 - The Apostle Islands
Just a four-hour drive northeast of the Twin Cities is a collection of 22 dots of land in Lake Superior that, together, make up the Apostle Islands. In the summers, you can alternate between lying out on sandy beaches, renting a kayak to explore sea caves and shipwrecks, and pitching your tent on the available campsites. In the winters, strap on skis to trek to the islands' famous ice caves (as long as Superior is sufficiently frozen to access them), or snowshoe around more than 50 miles of trails, some of which wind through old-growth forests. Check out the charming town on Madeline Island, the biggest island in the chain and the only one that allows cars, or romp through Bayfield and Ashland on the mainland. Oh, and look out for wildlife: Stockton Island boasts one of North America's greatest concentrations of black bears.
