Best Open Mic Minneapolis 2014 - Tap the Mic at Harriet Brewing
3036 Minnehaha Ave.
Minneapolis, MN 55406
If you happen upon Harriet Brewing's tap room on the second Wednesday of the month, you'll find the colorful garage space crowded with guitars and notebooks. Welcome to Tap the Mic. Started by one of Harriet's longtime employees, who also emcees, this is an open mic of the loose-and-friendly, sharing-creativity-over-a-beer-or-three variety. The night's sign-up sheet opens at 7 p.m., and by 8, the first performers — a mix of jazz musicians and poets, artists sketching on an easel and improvisational storytellers — take the stage. Things really heat up around 10, and don't wind down again until midnight. On slow nights — though those have been less frequent of late — regulars are invited to grab a house copy of a book like Alice in Wonderland and simply read to the crowd. Performers who don't want to go solo, or who just prefer collaborating, can invite the house musicians to stay on stage with them. Not performing? This isn't the reverent type of open mic, so feel free to talk, head to the food truck parked out back (and frequently moved to a table inside during winter months), and nurse one of Harriet's delicious brews.
