While the main-stage productions draw most of the attention at Pillsbury House — justifiably, as we'll see in a moment — it's important to note how vital the other offerings are for the surrounding neighborhood and theater in general. Arts on Chicago and the Breaking Ice company tackle issues of race and class from the heart of south Minneapolis. The Late Nite Series brings together emerging theater artists and hot musicians for evenings that are more like a night at the club than the theater. And then there are the main-stage shows. Two productions at Pillsbury House were among the very best in the Twin Cities in 2012. Buzzer (recently revisited in a transfer at the Guthrie Theater, which co-commissioned the work) tackled issues of race and entitlement by exploring the old adage, "You can't go home again." In the fall, the theater, along with producing partner the Mount Curve Company, presented the second of Tarell Alvin McCraney's Brother/Sister plays, The Brothers Size. The show, presented at the Guthrie's Dowling Studio, was an intense examination of the bonds of family and friendship. In between, there was Radiate Live!, a playful examination of love and redemption — with hot soul music to boot — from the mind of Daniel Alexander Jones.
