Stillwater's proximity to the Twin Cities makes it a popular destination for folks wanting to get away without spending the time or money to travel too far from home, and its beautiful fall colors and Victorian architecture have earned it the distinction of one of America's Prettiest Towns from Forbes magazine. Take a ride in a paddleboat, riverboat, or gondola; shop in one of its dozen or so antique stores; and stay in one of its sleepy B&Bs or historic inns, some overlooking the gorgeous St. Croix River, and it's easy to forget you're in one of the now-sprawling bedroom communities of Minneapolis-St. Paul. But remember, Stillwater is far from sleepy. Many of its local bars and restaurants offer live music, and the town hosts a jazz festival as well as the requisite vintage car show. And should you want to venture all the way out of state while still calling your weekend a "staycation," you're just across the lift bridge from the exotic land of Wisconsin.
