We know the hype around Seimone Augustus's athletic prowess: When she was three, she joined a basketball team for five-year-old boys. When she was 14, Sports Illustrated for Women put her on the cover and asked if she was "the next Michael Jordan." In 2006, she was the top pick in the WNBA draft and Rookie of the Year; by 2011 she led the Lynx to a WNBA championship and was named the the WNBA's Finals MVP. In 2012, she added to the Olympic gold medal collection that she started in Beijing in 2008. First, though, she did something even more impressive than play really good basketball: She started talking about her sexuality. In May, Augustus revealed her plans to wed her girlfriend of five years, LaTaya Varner. A month later, she and Varner grand marshaled the Twin Cities Pride Parade, and not long after, Augustus headed to London to become one of just 23 Olympic athletes, out of 10,000 competing, who identify as openly gay. In August, Augustus spoke to ESPN's Outside the Lines about not worrying that her love life would interfere with her career. "Before, you're a little bit afraid, like, 'Well, maybe I'll lose some fans,'" Augustus said. "But the people that love you want to be a part of who you are."
