Best Local Music Compilation Minneapolis 2013 - Twin Cities Funk & Soul: Lost Grooves from Minneapolis/St. Paul 1964-1979 (Secret Stash Records)

Sometimes the best new music isn't new at all. In the case of Secret Stash's stellar Funk & Soul compilation, the music has been here for decades, right under our noses, but hidden mostly out of sight. In fact, most of these songs may well have disappeared forever had the south Minneapolis label not undertaken this project, and it's something we should all be thankful for. This double LP, lovingly presented with period photos and carefully researched liner notes, was culled mostly from obscure 45s dating back to the 1960s and '70s, and it brings to life a Twin Cities that has long been consigned to history. The songs here are hot, sweaty, and irresistibly funky, played by bands like the Valdons, Prophets of Peace, and Wanda Davis — acts that once packed local clubs and defined the "Minneapolis sound" before anyone had heard of Prince. And if those groups never reached the stardom they dreamed of, at least Funk & Soul reminds us of what we all missed out on.
