Sledding, skiing, and skating are the trifecta of wintertime fun. While it's hard to find an urban backdrop for the first two activities, downtown St. Paul is home to one of the prettiest skating rinks in the Twin Cities. When Wells Fargo WinterSkate opens at the end of November, it's a prime marker in the capital city that the holiday season is underway. This annual favorite runs for only a couple chilly, glorious months, but with the spectacular views of the historic Landmark Center and Rice Park, it's worth braving the cold for both amateur and experienced skaters. Have the best lunch break ever and pop over to the rink near Rice Park for a quick whirl around the ice during the daytime, or go for a night skate while the Landmark Center is lit up for a romantic evening. If you're not into lacing up skates yourself, you can watch a few games of broomball on the ice on some days. The best part about this spot is that it's free, and are skates only a couple of bucks to rent (or free if you're a Wells Fargo customer), so you won't break the bank even if you end up taking a spill.
