The 19 Bar in Loring Park has been part of the GLBT community for more than 60 years, predating Stonewall and the start of the gay rights movement by decades. It retains the charm of a neighborhood hangout, rather than being an ultra-slick facility intended only for the hard-muscled beautiful people. Instead, you have a place that advertises, above everything else, its strong beer ($7.50 a pitcher during happy hour). There are also tournament-level pool tables (with actual tournaments the third Sunday of every month), dart boards, a jukebox packed with favorite tunes, and a smattering of bar food to keep you inside and enjoying the atmosphere all night long. Unless you decide to step out to the heated porch for a conversation away from the hubbub — and maybe the start of something more.
