Best Club DJ Minneapolis 2013 - DVS1
Techno has always been an important but decidedly underground part of the Minneapolis club scene, and often lately it finds itself triangulated from the hipster, hip-hop, and dubstep scenes. But techno has a solid fixture in Zak Khutoretsky since his days in the early aughts throwing raves in north Minneapolis warehouses and, most memorably, under highway bridges in St. Paul. Known then and now as DVS1, founder of the techno label Hush, Khutoretsky has lived by these beats for nearly two decades. In the past two years, his career has exploded internationally, his name shimmying up the highly coveted global DJ list at Resident Advisor to No. 58 in the world. The Minneapolis native and part-time Berliner has found himself deep in 11-hour marathon DJ sets at renowned techno dungeon Berghain in Germany, playing alongside the likes of Jeff Mills and Moodymann in Amsterdam, and closing the popular DEMF techno festival in Detroit. "Staying rooted in Minneapolis is really important to me," Khutoretsky says. "My vibe and overall attitude comes from here — it comes from the struggle that I endured to do what I love at home over the last 18 years."
