Best Clothing Store (Kids) - 2013
Once Upon a Child
Procuring a wardrobe for a tiny person can be more difficult than it sounds. Stores (and soon, our closets) are filled with adorable fancy outfits, scientifically proven to be irresistible to grandparents, that you'll be lucky if your kid gets to wear once before outgrowing them. Practical parents soon realize that used is the way to go for most of your young child's sartorial needs, as other families out there are constantly unloading quality stuff that's been barely, or sometimes never, used. Garage sales are a treasure trove, of course, but they're seasonal and hit-or-miss, and the latter is also true of most thrift stores. So if your kids don't require brand-new clothing (and trust us, they don't), Once Upon a Child is your best local option. You're guaranteed to find appropriate items in whatever size you're looking for (newborn to 16), and they'll all be free of major damage and stains, organized by size, and then sorted within sizes by color. If you're lucky, you'll find, say, a cute Hanna Andersson dress or barely used Columbia snowsuit at a significant discount. And even if you're not, you'll be able to pick up a few basic essentials — and/or an almost-new toy or book to entertain your little one — for cheap. And the best part is, you can bring along whatever your household has recently outgrown and trade it for cash or store credit: Baby equipment and furniture are also bought for resale, there's no need to make an appointment to sell goods, and clothing for all seasons is accepted year-round.
