Best Local Boy Made Good Minneapolis 2012 - Jim Burke

Readers' Choice: Joe Mauer

It takes a mix of hard work and luck to make a mark in Hollywood. Edina native and veteran film producer Jim Burke might add that it's important to have the right collaborators. For example, the University of Minnesota alum has a professional connection with director-writer Alexander Payne dating back to 1999's Election, but in recent months the focus has been on Payne's critically acclaimed film The Descendants, starring George Clooney. In the last few months, producer Burke donned a tux for many an award show honoring the tragic-comic family story set in Hawaii. And although it didn't score an Academy Award for Best Picture, The Descendants did take home the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Expect to see Burke's name in the production credits with Payne and other directors for years to come.
