It's hard to get a hipster out of his usual hang, where he can get served before the long line of schmucks waiting for drinks and is guaranteed his favorite spot any night of the week, be it at the pool table or holding court at a corner booth. When Hell's Kitchen moved into the garden-level space formerly occupied by Rossi's, it not only gained a bigger dining area and a new menu but also more space for live music on its ample stage, with plenty of room in front of it for dancing, or just standing around indifferently, as hipsters are wont to do. Add regular entertainment bookings that rivaled some of the longest-standing spots in town and the hipsters found the venue worth a look-see. The verdict: They like it! It might have something to do with the affordable cover, a mess of food and drink specials, and an ambiance informed by the creepy psychedelia of the Ralph Steadman art decorating its walls. Or it could be that hipsters can relate to its chef-owner, Mitch Omer, who, according to a 2009 interview with Andrew Zimmern, was stabbed at a Van Halen concert, had sex onstage at Red Rocks, played softball with Journey, stole props from Barry Manilow, and got a beer bottle broken over his head at a Waylon Jennings show, all while working security.
