The bagels at Common Roots Café in Uptown are completely straightforward: Your choices are limited to popular standards like plain, sesame, onion, whole wheat, and poppy seed—no bells, no whistles. That simplicity lets the locally sourced ingredients shine through: whole grains from Whole Grain Milling, honey from Ames Farm Limited, malt powder that crosses the border from Wisconsin. All those parts come together as the bagels are hand-rolled and boiled into endearingly misshapen circles that prove to be the perfect vehicles for the café's herb-laden cream cheeses or dressed up with lox. Crack through the bagel's top crust (and enjoy the surprising texture of the cornmeal dusting the bottom) and every other bagel will seem like a gummy, doughy fake-out in comparison.
