While the suburban landscape is grimly filled with T.G.I. Fridays, Chili's, and Red Lobsters, these aren't the type of places you want to chill. The food is edible, but each location is hardly a unique or enlightening experience. Unfortunately, really great destination pubs and restaurants can be hard to find when you live in a 'burb. That's why a gem like Barley John's is such a great discovery. Not only is it an excellent addition to the New Brighton area, but it is also worthy of a trek from the city or other suburbs. Its drink menu consists of beer, wine, and a great whiskey list, as well as a Scotch flight. They also make their own beer, and it is excellent. Adventurous brews include a porter with notes of coconut and a brown ale made with wild rice. The food is tasty, too. Burgers come highly recommended, and the menu is also vegetarian-friendly.
