Readers' Choice: Minneapolis Institute of Arts
The Twin Cities is blessed with a glut of worthy local museums. Each boasts attractions galore, from the sprawling Science Museum of Minnesota's Omnitheater to the compact Bell's dioramas. But none caters to us half as vigorously as the mighty Minneapolis Institute of Arts. General admission is always free, and special attractions often follow suit. Take "Foot in the Door." Running through June 13, it's an open exhibition that features nearly 5,000 works by Minnesota artists. The only criterion for selection: Works can't exceed a single cubic foot. The show grew out of the 85-year-old museum's Minnesota Artist's Exhibition Program, a major launching pad for artists from all over the state since 1975, with the kind of winning streak most sports teams would kill for. If mere inclusiveness isn't enough for you, consider the facility's myriad other programs, special events, and period rooms. Hell, the place has so much "there" in its "there" that the roughly 80,000 art objects from the spectrum of human culture almost come off as pure frosting. Almost.
