This may be the land of 10,000 lakes, but it's also the land of 10,000 tons of goose droppings, broken glass, and algae blooms. When it comes to city life, finding a waterway where you can catch some sun and take a dip at minimal risk of walking away with something monumentally icky in you or on you can be tricky. Why, hello Lake Calhoun. It's no artesian spring, but by God there's nothing going on in there that a shower afterward can't fix. The beaches are clean, the characters are plentiful, and even if you don't feel like going for a dunk, there are sailing opportunities and people-watching galore. So for those days when you don't feel like a drive to Square Lake and you lack the courage to take a chance at Lake Josephine, Lake Calhoun is a picturesque and occasionally adventurous place to soak up the rays.
