Morgan Thorson also earned Best Choreographer in 2008, but her recent full-evening piece Heaven, at the Walker Art Center, was so good that she deserves a second mention. Her collaboration with Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk of the Duluth band Low showcased the intense thought and rigorous movement processing that Thorson puts into all her work. The subject matter was demanding—the limits of faith and the impossibility of perfection—but she transformed a potentially dogmatic exercise into a poignant performance essay filled with unexpected, subtle, and often deeply stirring moments. Her dancers (some of the most respected movers in town) rose to the occasion. Heaven was a mature and memorable gift to local audiences from a choreographer who will probably grace this category again in the years to come.
