The word "powerhouse" barely comes close to describing the magnitude of the ever-expanding Rhymesayers label, which has already left a deep imprint on the music community in the Twin Cities and nationwide. Label founder and Atmosphere MC Slug is still riding high off last year's When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold, with a video for the latest single, "Your Glasshouse," just released via MTV last month; up-and-comer P.O.S. has critics nationwide drooling over his punk-fueled sophomore album, Never Better; and Brother Ali is back on the radar with a follow-up to 2006's The Undisputed Truth, last month's The Truth Is Here EP. The success of those three local rappers would be enough to push the label into the limelight, but they are only a small fraction of the Rhymesayers roster. Acts like Mac Lethal, MF DOOM, Eyedea & Abilities, I Self Devine, and Psalm One bolster Rhymesayers' reputation as a hub for literate, socially conscious, and groundbreaking hip hop. With the signing of new acts Abstract Rude and local activist and MC Toki Wright, the label is showing no sign of slowing down.
