Readers' Choice: Mall of America

When trying to dazzle out-of-town guests, there are the obvious choices like the Walker and First Avenue. But how about an activity that's free and showcases the best of outdoor Minnesota? Lake Harriet is the perfect way to spend an afternoon in the spring, summer, or fall. Generally not as crowded as Lake Calhoun, Lake Harriet even offers more activities than other lakes. The bike and walking paths are about three miles each, and the view of downtown Minneapolis is especially lovely as the sun sets. Two beaches are supervised and safe for kids to swim in. The Lyndale Park Rose Garden, with more than 3,000 plants, is also within walking distance, as is the Peace Garden. Other activities include free music many weekends (and some weeknights) at the band shell, fishing off the two docks, tennis courts, and areas ideal for picnicking.
