The intersection between rock and the dramatic stage is perilous territory, but the Jungle's production of John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask's Hedwig brought together all the show's best elements: the broken-down German drag queen (Jairus Abts) and her story of exploitation and self-loathing; Hedwig's seething spouse, Yitzhak (Ann Michels); and the story of how it all went wrong. It was crucial, of course, that the thing rock as well, and rock it did, with a live band tackling Trask's range of glam, punk, and sweet ballads with the proper mix of fire and assertion. This was a thrill from start to finish, made all the more transporting by the Jungle's trademark intimacy.
