Festivals during the summertime are a dime a dozen. Walk a couple of blocks from your home on the weekend and you will probably find some sort of street event selling the same bucket of cookies and lemonade for $5, and the same local acts jamming out onstage. The MayDay Parade and Festival is nothing like that. This yearly event brings the community together to celebrate the first of May. The parade is a spectacle of whimsy; participants come together early in the year to create enormous papier-mâché costumes. The parade ends and the festival begins after the Tree of Life Ceremony, followed by spirited performances by local groups onstage and booths full of local, sustainable food. The Twin Cities community certainly has a lot to celebrate.

The MayDay! Parade, Ceremony and Festival are gifts to the community from In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre (HOBT) and friends. HOBT funds, organizes, produces and leads the celebration. Public workshops are held on T/TH from 7-9 p.m. and Saturdays from 9-12 and 1-3 through the day of the celebration. All are welcome to participate and create. Mayday is on the first Sunday of May. This year, Sunday May 3rd, is the 35th anniversary of the MayDay!
