Twin Cities sports bars are understandably barren territory for fans of out-of-state sports teams, but Gabe's by the Park is happy to provide an oasis. Located in St. Paul next to Como Park—a good eight miles from those unruly Gopher-fiends in Dinkytown—Gabe's boasts more than 20 television sets, including two big-screens. On autumn Sundays, Packer cheeseheads swarm the sprawling bar and restaurant. No purple and gold in sight. On Saturdays, hordes of black-and-gold-wearing Iowa Hawkeye fans hold court with a few Wisconsin Badgers gathered around auxiliary TV sets. (It seems the lackluster Golden Gopher football team falls somewhere between men's figure skating and the national spelling bee on the relevancy totem pole here.) Not that the joint is stridently anti-local—Timberwolves, Twins, Wild, and St. Paul Saints games come standard.
