There's nothing quite like the thrill of trudging all the way up a mountain of snow trailing a plastic sled, snowboard, or tube; shooting back down the hill; then doing it all over again. Sledding is a God-given right, and there shouldn't be a fee, rules, or regulations. For that reason, we ignored the corporatization of sledding—the frozen water parks that have admission prices well into the double digits—and took our sleds and hot chocolate to the Minneapolis park system. At Theodore Wirth Park, golfers turn the fairway over to kids during the winter, and at the 10th hole, speed rules. Bundled-up kidlets zoom down the hill in their saucers and roll-up sleds, while the older, "cooler" ones sashay down on their snowboards. There are even rails and jumps for the serious daredevils. For those who mistakenly think they've outgrown sledding, the park's abundance of cross-country ski trails and a chalet ensure that you won't be left out of the fun.
