BEST SEASONAL ICE CREAM STAND - 2008
Dave's Popcorn and Carmelcorn
Nestled a block east of Cedar Avenue on 38th Street, on a cool, tree-shaded corner, is Dave's Popcorn. The small, shed-like building, which looks as if it took a long, happy sigh and settled into its old frame sometime around 1960, is open just a few months of the year to satisfy sweet tooths from miles around. Dave's fits in comfortably with the bungalows, grocery market, and antique record shop nearby. The small eatery is alluring, with its bright displays of candy, bags of popcorn, and long list of ice-cream flavors displayed in the screened windows. Their lunch special is a steal: Two hot dogs, a bag of chips, and a can of soda for only $3. Dave's is generous when it comes to dessert, too. Ice cream scoops are big, and the shakes and malts are filled to the brim. The place is a drive-through and walk-up establishment only, but there are plenty of tables and chairs out front where you can savor your treats outside. In this age of homegrown versus national-chain eateries, it's nice to see Dairy Queen deposed, if only between May and Labor Day.
