La Boheme

It may be easy to make light of Puccini's opera in this post-Rent world, but his work about the dreams of young artists and the deep pains of love can still pull an audience into its seductive spell. That's especially true with the talented team at Theatre Latte Da behind the production. Director Peter Rothstein's intimate, small-scale production had more grandeur and weight than the often epic and dull productions at major venues. Not only was the staging more intimate, so was the music, created by a small orchestra featuring a number of traditional street instruments. Add exquisite performances from the leads—especially from Meghann Schmidt as the doomed Mimi and Jill Sandager as Musetta—who not only sang with rare clarity but acted with it as well, and you had a rare night at the theater.
