Readers' Choice: The Wedge

Nearing its 30th anniversary, Mississippi Market has been around since the times when only hippies cared about local or organic food. And with the sad demise last year of North Country Co-op (the Twin Cities' first such store, started in 1971), we're especially glad that Mississippi Market has survived and thrived. Still offering fresh produce, reliable bulk staples, and environmental consciousness, the stores have improved their selections of artisan meats and cheeses, and always have full, tempting deli cases. You don't need to be a member to shop here, but membership is easier than ever: A one-time investment gets you numerous discounts, a monthly newsletter (featuring helpful tips from the produce department on what's in season), and the sense of contributing to the community good (and no, you don't have to work any shifts at the store). Mississippi Market is looking for a replacement location for the Randolph store, which it's outgrowing, but nothing's been decided yet. One thing's sure: This co-op is definitely sticking around.
