BEST HORSE TRAINER

Mac Robertson

Mac Robertson has established himself as the dominant trainer at Canterbury Park, leading the money board for four straight years. In fact, there's no one even in his neighborhood. During last year's meet, Robertson-trained horses cleared more than $1 million in winnings. The closest contender? Jamie Ness at roughly $600,000. Robertson also set the standard for finishing in the money. A whopping 71 percent of his mounts came home in the top three, while more than half took either first or second. Part of the 34-year-old trainer's success can be attributed to the pedigree of the horses he's working with. Robertson's beasts are simply a cut above the thoroughbreds usually encountered at the humble Shakopee track. But the taciturn son of a horse trainer has also earned a reputation for outworking his competitors. "He's like clockwork the way he works in the morning," says Canterbury Park track analyst Jeff Maday. "It's fun to watch."
