Casper & Runyon's Nook

Every neighborhood bar has its crowd. At the Nook, it's burgers and fries for college kids and their adult, mortgage-laden neighbors. Except on Sundays. Sundays are, after all, "Nookster" nights, meaning not only do kids eat free, but Casper & Runyon's Nook becomes the pickup scene of the Highland Park/Mac Groveland neighborhood—that is, if you have a toddler in tow. Granted, a lot of bars in Minnesota aren't exactly kid-hostile anymore thanks to various smoking bans, but the Nook on Nookster night is different. Maybe it's the close quarters. The place is narrow and long and you're always shoulder-to-shoulder, because it's always standing-room-only. Maybe it's the beat-up pool table or the smell of homemade onion rings. Whatever it is, it just feels right to sidle over to that single mom at the bar, stick your toddler on the opposite stool, and buy a round—one Summit, one chocolate milk.
