BEST MEXICAN RESTAURANT Minneapolis 2007 - Salsa a la Salsa
1420 Nicollet Ave.
Minneapolis, MN 55403
Readers' Choice: Pepitos
A perennial favorite for its novel, fresh, healthy dishes, bracingly tangy margaritas, and color-saturated decor, Eat Street's Salsa a la Salsa has new competition this year—from its own outpost of the same name opened in the mercifully quiet northwest corner of the Midtown Global Market. The menu here has all of the creative preparations on offer at the original: blackened salmon tatemado, served on red and green sauces ($10.50); chicken mixotes with limey, tender cactus strips and avocado ($9.99); and one of the Twin Cities' most refreshing salads, composed of orange and jicama. In addition to black and refried beans, sides include a cardiologist-pleasing mix of perfectly grilled asparagus, carrots, red onions, and sweet peppers. For dessert, order the less virtuous but equally unusual pineapple tamale with ice cream and cranberry compote.
