Comments (0) BEST LESBIAN BAR - 2007

Pi

Don't insult the competition by pretending it doesn't exist: Lesbians won't abandon St. Paul's Town House or the moveable dance night Twilight anytime soon, while plenty of ostensibly gay male hotspots are also female favorites. But Pi is the first by-and-for-queer-women club since the demise of Club Metro and Lucy's Saloon in St. Paul, and it feels good. Located around the block from Memory Lanes in what used to be an American Legion, the hopping venue might be the first local dyke bar to establish itself (and rapidly so) as a hangout, restaurant, disco, and concert hall in one. The outwardly nondescript Seward spot has booked national music (Washington rappers Scream Club opened the room in February), karaoke, movie screenings, and specialty DJs (Lori Barbero of Babes in Toyland and Venus of All the Pretty Horses, spinning "old-school vinyl" on alternate Tuesdays). And when there's nothing going on, there's still a full menu with food until 2:00 a.m. (try the G.L.B.T.—guacamole, lettuce, bacon, and tomato), trademark drinks such as the Apple Pi Martini, pool tables, a happy hour, and a public art space. On a typical Saturday night, DJ Naughty Boyy (a.k.a. Tori Fixx) spins Rick James's "Superfreak," Biggie's "Hypnotize," and a Lady Sovereign track for an integrated crowd while a giant video screen plays what looks like a '60s stag film. There are men here, too, and the club's "gender-inclusive" bathroom, for those in between, is both practical and suggestive of the spirit here.
